D. S. Senanayake College is a renowned national school in the city of Colombo which holds a great cultural history. Based on a concept of Honorable late Minister of Education. I. M. R. A. Iriyagolla in the regime of Honorable late prime Minister Dudly Senanayake on 10th of February 1967. D. S. Senanayake College was initiated with 167 students together and with academic staff of 5 teachers in the locality called “KumbiKelle” Mr. R. I. T. Alles had been the founder principal of the College and Mr. A. D. P. Karunanayake was the Deputy Principal.
As a resolution the Ministry of Education had taken a decision to increase the number of primary schools, to meet with the increasing demand of the parents in enroling the children to Colombo schools. The secretary of the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs Mr. M. J. Perera was assigned to find a suitable plot of land to start the new school.
Accordingly the empty plot of land situated down the Gregory’s road normally “KumbiKelle” adjoining Kinsy road was selected for the purpose with another land bounded the said premises which belongs to the Ministry of Defense and also was acquired Building plans were prepared and implemented by the state engineering co – operation. Mr. R.I.T. Alles who had been an assistant teacher in the Royal College had been appointed as the principal of D. S. Senanayake College. He was given a helping hand by the principal of Royal College Mr. B. Premarathne. The cadet platoon of the Royal College had cleaned the land holding a shramadana.
Five assistant teachers and office equipment was also donated by the Royal College.
